Reunification

October 3rd, 1990, I was 8 years old.

After four decades of Cold War and with pressure from the German chancellor Helmut Kohl, Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev agreed to a unified Germany within NATO, leading to Germany’s reunification on this day in 1990.

32 years ago, my world changed and I didn’t know the significance or impact. However, what I truly remember is that suddenly it turned from a greyish into a colourful world. With new shades and new bright colours like turquoise and pink.

I remember how proud and happy my sister and I were about our bright pink radio cassette player and how often we patiently waited for our favourite songs to press record. And with the same patience, fixed our beloved cassette with a pencil. 90s child.

Music is such an important element and one of the few to feel connected to a place, a person, a feeling, a situation, a memory, and home.

99 Red balloons is one of those songs that I tend to put on from time to time when I am looking for that connection with childhood memories. The song by Nena, was first released in 1983, when I was one year old. And yet it’s there and still is with me today. That’s the marvellous magic of music.

Today, I am thinking of all the people who were once children and remember their dreams of making this place a beautiful and free world to live in for themselves and the next generation.

And I want to do the best I can to help children dream of a world full of colours and filled with music and happy people around them that they can remember for the rest of their lives.
