What My Top Story on Vocal Media Taught Me About Resharing Content

That article was originally posted on March 29 on Medium and had 142 views, which brought me $0.71. For the same post, I only received 13 reads and earned $0.05 on Vocal.

The difference was because this article as a Top Story on Vocal, which is almost the equivalent of Medium’s further contribution, made me an extra $5.

Yes, $5.05 is not a large sum of money. But that’s not the lesson here.

Here are three lessons I’d like to pass on to fellow writers:

One question Quora users often request my answer to is “Should I post my Medium/Vocal articles to my own blog?”

My answer is always a hard YES!

You don’t put all of your eggs in one basket and you don’t store all of your content on one site.

By resharing content to other platforms, you will not only have a backup drive for all of your work but you’ll also expose them to a new group of audience.

This is important because, in some countries like mine, you can’t access Medium without changing the VPN. Not allowing 72 million internet users to read my stories is not a wise move.

The algorithm is bat-shit crazy. Here’s an example:

I submitted the same story twice. The first time I posted it at the same time as my Medium post. The second time was one month later.

Both times it got approved by the Vocal Media team.

However, only the latter post became a Top Story.
