Play The Shit Out of Your Role

I was waiting on a train to travel down to a surprise celebration for my older brother, Scott. My anxiety was through the roof, social anxiety and spotlight syndrome going wild, I felt awful and it was a rare day where I really thought I wouldn’t be able to leave the house. I was fidgeting on my phone and posted in my mentorship group Not Dead Yet about my current situation. The response I got was a punch to the ego for sure, but necessary. I was told that how I was feeling did not matter, it’s not about me, this was a celebration for my brother. My role as a brother was to show up and be there to celebrate my brother’s accomplishment, that’s it.

Having this drop kick to the ego did not rid me of my anxiety or spotlight syndrome but it cleared the fog of bullshit and I was able to see what my role was and what I needed to do. I love my brother and I wouldn’t miss celebrating his achievements, it ended up being a great night and how I felt melted away as soon I was with good company.

Roles evolve over time and new roles need to be learned too. If you speak with someone that has had a kid they are very likely to say how much it has changed them, if they claim it hasn’t either they are lying or a shit dad.

You have multiple roles needing to be played, imagine treating your friend like your new born baby, trying to burp him over your shoulder and seeing if he’s shat himself, unless your pal is blackout drunk then it’s all a bit unnecessary, you must be able to adapt and play these roles to the best of ability. If a wee kid hands you an invisible ringing phone you better pick that shit up and answer it goddammit!!
