The history of the Sacramento Gold Miners

The Sacramento Gold Miners were a Canadian Football League (CFL) team that existed from 1993 to 1995. The team was based in Sacramento, California, and was part of the CFL’s expansion into the United States during the early 1990s.

The Gold Miners were previously known as the Sacramento Surge in 1992, when they were a part of the World League of American Football (WLAF). However, after the WLAF suspended operations, the team joined the CFL and changed their name to the Gold Miners.

The team played their home games at Hornet Stadium, which is located on the campus of California State University, Sacramento. Despite being based in the United States, the Gold Miners played by CFL rules, which differ from the rules of American football.

During their three-year existence, the Gold Miners had a mixed level of success. They made the playoffs in their inaugural season in 1993 but were eliminated in the first round. In 1994, they finished with a losing record and missed the playoffs. In their final season in 1995, the team struggled both on and off the field, leading to financial difficulties.

In 1996, the team relocated to San Antonio, Texas, and became the San Antonio Texans. The CFL’s expansion into the United States ultimately did not achieve long-term success, and all American-based teams, including the Texans, folded after the 1995 season due to financial challenges and lack of fan support.

The Sacramento Gold Miners were a short-lived but notable part of the CFL’s expansion efforts into the United States, leaving behind a small chapter in the league’s history.
