Memorias

Si me retratas alegre, con la mueca apenas perceptible en el trozo de papel, ¿dejará la tristeza de nublarme los labios, de enraizarse en mi marcha, de ahuecar mis vocablos? ¿Engendras, acaso, las…

Why do we push away the people we love most?

This is a subject that has been on my mind a lot lately. Why do we push away the people we love most? Honestly I don’t know the answer to this question. It’s still something that I wonder about, and something i’m going through right now. Now when I say we push away the people we love, I’m not only talking about significant other’s. I’m talking about friends, family, and significant others.

I think we push away the people we love most because we’re scared. Scared of rejection, failure, being lonely. I would much rather be alone, and not hurt, than alone and hurt as well. Sometimes we push people away because we don’t know what we want, so we let others decide for us. It’s natural for us to want the things that make the most sense to have, rather than work for the things that don’t always make sense. Taking the easy route. In the long run, we are only cutting ourselves short.

Another reason I feel like we push people away is that we feel like we don’t deserve them. We don’t think high enough of ourselves. Nobody will ever be “too good” for you. Lori Deschene said, “we can’t hate ourselves into a version of ourselves we can love”. That hits hard for me. Read it again. Hating yourself isn’t going to turn into loving yourself. Something I believe strongly is that we can’t genuinely love someone, until we love ourselves. It all starts with you.

So before you push that person away, take a good long look at yourself. See where your worth is at, make sure you’re comfortable in your own skin. Then take it for what it’s worth, and run with it.
