Lessons I learned from a Creative Teacher

In the months before my Nonna passed I was taking courses at our local Community College one of those classes was a creative writing class, a class with an amazing professor, she was understanding with the classes I had to miss, and even after I missed more than I could have possibly caught up on due to Nonna’s funeral planning and all that went with that, but when she saw me in the grocery store one day, she expressed her sympathy and told me I had a place in her class, whenever I was ready to come back. This was my second time in her class. I liked it so much I decided to take it again unfortunately the timing was not right, or maybe it was perfect because I needed the distraction when I was there. And I needed the lessons, some have stuck with me almost twenty years later.

1:) Do not fear the blank page, think of it as an opportunity to create a world, a world made of your imagination.

2:) You don’t always have to write what you know, but write what you want to learn about, write what gives you a burning passion.

Write what should not be forgotten.” —Isabel Allende

3:) We all have a wealth of material to work with, whether we are writing fiction or non-fiction we can draw from our life experiences to share our stories.

4:) There’s no such thing as a perfect draft, but after so many rewrites, you have to come to terms that we’ve done our best.

The need to be perfect could stand true for many aspects of life, but it’s important not to beat yourself up over the projects that don’t turn out the way we want them too.

5:) It’s best to use three drafts, one zero draft, or free writing draft a rough draft and a final draft.
