Adventuring among bamboo stalks, I feel a dampened heat. A conscious summer portal, transformation of the meek. Inside bands of growing grass, dreaming to belong. I continue down a broken path…

3 Super Tips for Managing a Heavy Remote Workload

Unsplash

Here are our top three tips for managing a heavy remote workload, because with freedom comes responsibility. Ultimately, when it comes down to it, managing your workload is your responsibility. Keeping a planner, only taking on what you can handle, and sticking to a schedule are your golden keys for making it all happen.

Everybody needs a planner. It doesn’t matter if it’s an old-fashioned pen and paper deal or a digital calendar. Choose whatever works best for you, and then stick to it religiously. Every time a new assignment is acquired, note it (and its due date) in your planner. Every time you schedule a meeting, pencil it in. Every time a new project is discussed, make note of it.

Writing everything down allows two things to happen. Firstly, it allows you to actually keep track of everything that’s on your plate. Secondly, and perhaps most interestingly, it allows your subconscious to drop the stress of having to remember everything because it is written down somewhere. See? You’re not just staying on track with a planner, you’re actually giving your brain a break.

We know, turning down work is hard — but if you’re not going to have the time and energy to give it all you’ve got, is it really worth doing it? Turning in work that is less than perfect is never something you want to be doing. Ultimately, it will prevent you from getting future work. Next time you’re tempted to take on that one extra opportunity, already knowing that there won’t be time for it, think about the future of your career.

On a positive note, being honest with your employers and potential employers might lead to a great solution for both of you. Saying something like, “I’d love to take on this project, but right now I have X, X, and X on my plate. Would it be possible for me to take your project on in a few weeks time?” is a wonderful conversation starter to have with every employer where you have to turn down an opportunity.
