Your Guide to Taking Care of Oily Skin

a woman with green eyes.

One of the most common skin concerns is oily skin. Only people with oily skin know hard it is to repeatedly wash, blot, and mattify the skin to remove that shiny layer of oil from their skin surface.

Read on to learn the best skincare solutions for oily skin.

Let’s understand why your skin could be producing excessive oil.

However, too much sebum production can make your skin oily, increasing your chances of getting acne and clogged pores.

Before you build an elaborate skincare regime to alleviate the effects of oily skin, you need to determine whether your skin type is oily.

There’s one way to check.

When you wake up in the morning, look closely at your skin in the mirror. If it appears to be clogged from oil and feels sticky, you have oily skin. You can also try blotting it using tissue paper. Your skin type is oily if the tissue paper becomes translucent after being dabbed on the skin.

If certain parts of your skin have excessive facial oil, like the T-zone, you have combination skin.

There isn’t a specific reason for oily skin, but it happens due to a range of reasons like genetics, increased stress levels, and hormone changes.

Firstly, wash your face regularly. This is one of the most obvious steps to take when you’re building a skincare regime, but many people with oily skin don’t cleanse their skin daily.

Don’t overdo it; wash your face twice a day. Avoid using harsh soaps and detergents. Only opt for gentle soaps that don’t strip away the moisture.

Here are a few things to remember when washing oily skin:

· Use lukewarm water and use a gentle cleanser

· Avoid using rough washcloths and loofas, which can create friction and promote more oil production

· Avoid soaps that have added fragrances and harsh chemicals. These can irritate the skin and dry it out, stimulating more sebum production

Here are some products that can also mitigate the effects of oily skin.

· Benzoyl peroxide

· Salicylic acid

· Beta-hydroxy acid

· Glycolic acid

If you haven’t ever used any of these products before, always do a patch test on a small area of your skin before applying them on your entire face.

The next thing to remember is to invest in a high-quality toner that is well-suited to your skin.

After your skin has been properly cleansed from oil, dirt, and makeup, exfoliate with a toner that contains:

· Lactic acid

· Salicylic acid

· Glycolic acid

Remember that these products might not have the same effects on everyone. Some astringent toners can also irritate the skin and cause a tingling sensation.

Always test your toner on a small section of your skin before incorporating it into your routine.

Clay masks have minerals like bentonite and smectite that reduce sebum levels and skin shininess since it quickly absorbs the oil.
