Why the Indian Government must push Xiaomi to switch to Stock Android

Indians have been loving Xiaomi since it launched in India in 2014. Their phones have the best price-to-performance ratio, so they sell like hotcakes. Their flash sale strategy keeps the hype going for their latest release for months.

Xiaomi’s web browsers collect an inordinate amount of data even in incognito mode. Although they did put a toggle button inside their own Mi Browser and Mint Browser which allows you to choose if you want to share your usage stats with Xiaomi inside Incognito mode.

I think, the Government of India should enforce Xiaomi to release devices only with Stock Android. I won’t be comparing every feature of Stock Android and MIUI here, this blog covers all the majority comparisons (which matters). What the blog doesn’t cover is the following point:

The Government of India has a history of banning a lot of things in India, for “public welfare and interest”. It could also enforce Xiaomi to ship all their upcoming devices with Stock Android only. While the Make In India program will remain an Assemble In India program for a long time, the least we could do is to cut down the data harvesting practices by these Chinese companies and make them opt for more open-source alternatives. Stock Android remains the best open-source alternative to MIUI, and enforcing it will not just curb bad privacy practices but also make them more transparent if they make any changes in the source code.
