In ancient China women dealt with their periods was by using what were essentially sandbags. They’d put sand in the cloth, and make sure it was tightly bound. Then it would be used as a pad. Somehow. Once the sand was saturated, they’d dump it. After rinsing the cloth, they’d fill it with clean sand and repeat until their periods were over.
