When “Prolific” Creatives Need to Slow Down

I see a good deal of articles about overcoming writer’s block. I read them with a vague curiosity — the same way I might read about a person who has a pet crocodile.

I have never had writer’s block. I have the opposite issue, and I know there are more of you

out there.

Last week I was seized with a number of poem ideas and I had the idea to write them as songs. I stayed up all night writing lyrics and learning about chords. I went to the mall and bought a new microphone to sing into.

There are other times where my ideas come faster than I can write them down. A month is more than enough time for me to write a 50,000-word book.

I am a brain vomiter. My dad is one, and his dad is one. My dad paints and draws feverishly. He always has ideas for new games and businesses. Most of his ideas are centered around visual arts and exercise.

My brain vomiting is centered around the written word and dance.

I am often described as “prolific.” In the world of the internet, this is a good thing to be. I have lately rejected the term in favor of slowing down.

During graduate school, I won an award for my thesis. Originally, the manuscript was 80,000 words long, and I cut it down to 60,000.

“It was a lot of brain vomit,” I explained in my acceptance speech (to some groans and moans).

And there I had it — the phrase I would carry with me into the future.

If you, like me, are a brain vomiter, we are not without our weaknesses. We should not allow the brain vomit to reign supreme just because most of the help articles are centered around blocks.

We have our own process to navigate.

Cranking out new content on a more-than-daily basis is considered a good skill these days. But I, as a brain vomiter, must exhibit self-control.
