Social Media Manager | Community Manager

Community Managers serve as the face of a company. A community manager is a marketing professional responsible for the management and development of a company’s online community. Community Managers are involved in various activities such as communications, PR, social media, events, and content creation, etc. They are responsible for building, growing and managing the company’s community online and engaging with customers and fans through social media and live events. Community managers typically report to someone at the director level. Despite the manager title, most community managers don’t manage anyone. “A community manager will post as a brand ambassador under their own account, not the brands, and work on developing the community by participating in discussions, finding new customers and listening to the current ones.” (SproutSocial).

On the other hand, a social media manager manages an organization’s online presence by developing a strategy, producing good content, analyzing usage data, facilitating customer service and managing projects and campaigns. The social media manager also set the strategy for an upcoming product launch, creating a video, analyzing data across platforms, designing viral GIFs, coordinating messaging with PR & Communications, running paid advertisements and lots more. “A social media manager will post as the brand’s account on social networks. They’re the voice of the brand and are responsible for posts, replies and general content.” (SproutSocial).

The social media manager and the community manager both work in the marketing department. A social media manager works online and reports to the social media or the marketing director. Social media managers also work directly with the social media strategist to monitor content and performance.

The community managers usually have discussions with the strategist that might involve ideas on how to recruit more community members. It’s also common for community managers to be the representatives of the brand.

But social media and community managers have common skills such as communication skills. Social media and community managers must be digitally savvy. Both roles must communicate with each other to keep informed on the other’s work. They must also be flexible enough to manage the complexity of social media.
