Growth mindset for the product

Learning something new requires the right mindset or attitude.I remember once asking my Piano teacher how he became so good, and he simply replied, “practice , practice and practice”.Learning a new skill can be fun and easy. But it can also be very challenging. Often, it involves stepping outside your comfort zone and making mistakes. Think of what it was like to learn to ride a bicycle, for example. I remember crashing numerous times until I was able to stay upright on the bike.

The same holds for product management. When you create a product strategy for the first time, you are most likely to make plenty of mistakes. You may not use the right method of research and validation techniques; your target group may be too big or small and heterogeneous; the value proposition may not be compelling; the standout features of your product may not be terribly exciting; and the business goals may not be measurable. But that’s OK as long as you are able to recognize that you made a mistake and you are willing to learn from it.Now, you might say that’s just a sign that I lack talent. But achievement requires effort, and the better we want to become at something, the more effort is required. It is not a weakness, the uncertainty and emotional challenge we face everyday is not an optional .The level to which we protect ourselves from being vulnerable is a measure of our fear and disconnection.

To make any product successful first you need to be disciplined yourself. If you don’t have growth mindset there is little chance that product will be successful.Teams that embrace the growth mindset and learning inclination can anticipate challenges and opportunities rather than just react to them. These teams also get better over time, because high performers are attracted to growth mindset cultures. It is up to management to create a growth mindset culture one that tolerates failures.Try to make regular reflection part of your work, and cultivate mindfulness. This will allow you see more clearly what you hold dearly and what you are attached to. It will help you better understand your tendencies, and preferences. This is the first step for developing your product management practice and yourself. If you resist the experience and try to wish it away, it’s only going to seem terrifying, pointless, and dangerous. But if you accept the experience and embrace it, you’ll find that it’s harmless fun.Accept the things that scare you, accept your fear, and accept the insecurities, limitations, and imperfections that make you afraid. You can’t wish them away, so you might as well have some fun.

What’s more, views are relative, and there is no one right way. People have different preferences and needs, and different circumstances call for different approaches. What works well for your product may not be the best approach for another offering or a different context. Don’t let your knowledge, skills, or beliefs define who you are. Otherwise they will hold you back, and you won’t be able to fulfil your true potential. As a manager it’s your responsibility to create a safe place to fail, for everyone.Managers and peers from higher positions of privilege can start to build the empathy needed to create an equitable and inclusive culture by educating themselves.

People having growth mindset don’t constantly trying to prove that they are better than others. They surround themselves with the most able people they can find. They try to align their personal goal with company’s vision.
